Picture of tourist sea kayaking in Terra Nova, Newfoundland

The Consummate Explorer

You are standing in the bow of a rigid hull inflatable boat. It skims across the gentle swell past cliffs so high that your neck aches to see the top. The smell of salt has become so familiar that you’ll only notice it when you’re on land and it isn’t there.

Before you have a chance to reflect on your adventures to this point, the humpback whale you met in the water, the waves you cut with your own power in a kayak, the familiar-yet-strange culture of the locals, the sun is blacked out as the boat enters caves so large that you wonder if God carved his own personal cathedral of the sea.

The only thing holding you back from becoming the consummate explorer is a look inside of million years old rock, carved by a billion waves and hundreds of thousands of storms. You are now entering the sea caves of Bell Island.

You have not visited, nor have you merely seen. You have experienced this new world.

You will know this place, this Newfoundland, better than your own home. So much so, that in a way, it has become your new home.
